Successful leaders prioritise their tasks. Many executives fill their days backwards. Here’s the costly mistake.
Picture a large jar on your desk.
You have rocks, pebbles, and sand to fill it.
Rocks = essential objectives only you can do in your role.
Pebbles = important tasks that can be delegated carefully.
Sand = nice-to-haves that may need to wait.
Here’s what most executives do wrong: they first pour in the sand.
They tackle the immediate problem.
The one they know how to solve.
The comfortable task that gives quick satisfaction.
By lunchtime, their jar was full of sand and pebbles.
No room left for the rocks that move the business forward.
To prioritise tasks start with the question:
“What must be done that can only be done by me?”
Your rocks might include:
• Setting strategic direction
• Coaching your team to step up
• Building key stakeholder relationships
If these aren’t in your diary first, they’ll never fit.
Which rocks are you leaving outside your jar?
